I Formed a Party with a Girl via an Adventurer Matching App - Chapter 54
The Final Quest
Our town, "Alterawalda," is an adventurer town that has thrived around its Adventurers' Guild. Geographically, the Adventurers' Guild building sits proudly right at the dead center of the town, with main streets extending toward the north, south, east, and west from it. The main streets are lined with armories, blacksmiths, and item shops geared toward adventurers, and plenty of adventurers can be seen stopping by. Where foot traffic is heavy, numerous food stalls set up to cash in on the crowds. Thanks to that, the area bustles with many people besides just adventurers.
The central part of this town was built exactly for that purpose.
When Cordelia and I walked into the Adventurers' Guild together, it was packed to a degree we rarely saw.
"If they put out a mobilization order to the entire town, I guess it's bound to end up like this."
"Even so, looking at the big picture, it seems the adventurers who actually bothered to show up are in the minority."
"Really?"
"They're a bunch that risks their lives adventuring every single day, after all. Even if they're told, 'Anyone who's slacking off, get over here,' most of them will just say, 'I'm too busy resting,' and ignore the mobilization order entirely."
"What a hopeless bunch."
"But because they're that kind of crowd, you could also say adventuring is the only job they're fit for. Well, the guild knows this too, which is why they put out a blanket summon for everyone. They know most won't show up anyway."
"It makes us look like idiots for actually making the trip down here."
A massive, bulletin-board-like display was set up at the front of the guild. The reason for gathering us adventurers seemed to lie in a poster pasted up right there.
The adventurers who had gathered after hearing the bell pushed through the crowd to read the poster. And the moment they understood its contents, almost all of them immediately turned right around and headed back the way they came.
Because the turnover of the crowd was so rapid, Cordelia and I made it to the very front row of the gathering in no time at all. There, looking up at the poster, the following text danced across the page:
【Notice: Recruitment for Volunteer Soldiers to Subjugate the Demon King】
"...I see."
Cordelia nodded with an air of understanding.
"If this is the reason they're calling people out, it makes total sense why most adventurers wouldn't respond to the summon."
A recruitment notice for volunteer soldiers to subjugate the Demon King.
When people say the Demon King, they mean the undisputed root of all evil who rules over the monsters. An absolute sovereign possessing a massive pool of magical power far greater than any other living creature on this earth. The alien territory ruled by that very Demon King is an absolute danger zone that most adventurers wouldn't dare even approach.
Faced with a blunt request to go out and slay a thing like that, just how many people would actually step forward to volunteer?
Exactly as Cordelia had reasoned, most of the adventurers left the moment they glanced at the title of the flyer.
...However. There was one singular, incredibly rare eccentric. Moving against the flow of the departing adventurers, they stepped through the wide-open front doors of the guild.
Just a single person. But without a doubt, reckless eccentrics like that do exist somewhere or another in this town.
To scoop up guys like that. Even if thousands of people turned their backs on them, the guild had called out to every adventurer in town just to pick up those precious few.
Cordelia and I also looked up at the flyer from the very front of the crowd.
The notice for recruiting Demon King subjugation volunteers. Beneath that, it noted that the Demon King's executives, the Four Heavenly Kings, had been severely weakened. As a result, the Demon King's Army was weaker than it had ever been before. If there was ever a time to strike the Demon King, the only chance was now. It made sense why the guild had come to that conclusion.
Thanks to the completion of a guild quest, the Slime Queen had been subjugated. Though it wasn't explicitly stated, that was the work of Cordelia's and my party.
Furthermore, according to an investigation by scouts dispatched by the guild, the other Four Heavenly Kings—the Golem Master, the Succubus, and the Gargoyle—had also reportedly been neutralized. Unlike the Slime Queen, the reasons behind the neutralization of those three were apparently unknown.
"...If I went and told them that one of those three, the Succubus, is currently in our living room sucking my cock, I wonder what would happen?"
"Don't you dare. If some hotheaded idiots come over and try to arson our place, it's going to be a massive pain."
As for the remaining Golem Master and the Gargoyle, we didn't have the slightest clue as to why they had been neutralized either.
Did some highly skilled party like us secretly assassinate them or something?
"So? What are we doing?"
Cordelia asked.
"What do you mean, 'what are we doing?' A thing like this is already a given, right?"
"I guess we're thinking the exact same thing. As expected of a partner with over 200% compatibility."
"You bet."
Exchanging a grin, the two of us spoke simultaneously to check our answers.
"Naturally, we're going to subjugate him!"
"Naturally, it's a huge pain, so we're skipping out!"
"Huh?"
"I'm sorry, we'll participate."
And so, Cordelia and I decided to accept the quest to subjugate the Demon King.
