When we informed the receptionist at the guild counter that we were accepting the Demon King subjugation quest, the staff member flashed a beaming smile as she spoke. She was the same female clerk who had assisted us back when we used the matching app.
Several windows for accepting quests lined the counter. Right now, every single one of them appeared to be occupied, though the vast majority were likely just handling standard quest paperwork.
Cordelia leaned over the counter and questioned the clerk.
"Once we accept the quest, is it fine if we head out to slay him immediately?"
"Ah, please wait. Since our opponent is who he is this time, we are proceeding with the strategy by specially organizing a large-scale formation party."
"A large-scale formation?"
Apparently, Cordelia didn't know what that meant. You're supposed to be the top graduate of the Holy Regiastar Training Institute, aren't you? What on earth did they teach her at that institute if she came out without knowing a single piece of practical field information?
"A large-scale formation means bundling multiple parties that usually operate independently into a single, massive combined group."
"Correct. It's a tactic used when subjugating entities with immense magical power, like Holy Dragons or Evil Gods. To put it bluntly, it means overwhelming them with sheer numbers."
The clerk nodded, supplementing my explanation.
"The departure of the large-scale formation party is scheduled for one week from now. Therefore, the plan is for you to gather on that day with the other parties who accepted the quest, and work together to march toward the Demon Realms."
"How tedious."
"It's to protect the lives of our adventurers, after all. It can't be helped."
Faced with Cordelia putting her un-adventurer-like selfishness on full display, the clerk merely offered a slight, strained smile.
"For you two, who managed to bring down one of the Four Heavenly Kings with just the two of you, it might be a hard concept to wrap your heads around. But generally speaking, when adventurers face a mighty foe, they form a cabal to tackle it. The survival rate is much higher that way."
"Hmm."
What do you mean, "Hmm"...?
Even as her partner, I was starting to feel apologetic. It's because my compatibility with Cordelia is too damn high that she grew up into such a reckless, bratty adventurer.
Since the clerk was still young, she let it slide with a polite laugh, but if this had been a battle-hardened veteran clerk, we couldn't have complained even if they straight-up clicked their tongue at us.
"Well then, I have registered your acceptance of the quest. Good luck with the subjugation!"
Hearing the clerk's parting words, we turned around to leave the guild counter. However, as if calling us back, the clerk spoke to our retreating figures.
"Ah, right, right. Why don't you two check your matching app status while you're at it?"
"The matching app?"
Hearing those highly relevant words, we spun back around, looking suspicious.
"Why do we need to check a matching app at this late stage? We've already formed a party, and our compatibility is as flawless as it gets."
"That is true, but the guild recommends periodically checking the matching app results. After all, adventurers constantly grow through their daily exploits, right? As a result, it's not rare at all for the compatibility within a party to shift."
"Is that how it works?"
The matching app was basically a system designed to look for highly compatible partners when forming a party. I figured it was a one-and-done deal once you found a match, but apparently, using it continuously could lead to discoveries that helped fine-tune a party's synergy.
"Especially this time, since your opponent is an unprecedentedly powerful foe. Re-confirming your compatibility with your partner right now and building a strategy based on that wouldn't be a bad idea."
"I suppose so."
Cordelia crossed her arms and glanced over at me. Apparently, she was signaling that she'd leave the decision up to me.
Either way, this matching app service was operated by the guild in hopes of boosting the overall combat capability of adventurer parties. Consequently, as long as you were an active adventurer, the service was completely free of charge.
"In that case, I guess it wouldn't hurt to check it one more time just to be safe."
"If you say so, then I guess we'll request it. Well, it's probably just going to show a flawlessly compatible result again anyway."
"Who knows, maybe after going through all those battles, our compatibility has gotten even better."
The two of us kept cracking jokes like that, laughing out loud.
Eventually, the clerk brought over a document summarizing our party suitability rating, calculated based on the data we had already registered with the guild.
